Breslev Life is a free Torah learning app (daily learning, learning cycles, Sichos HaRan, audio, video, a Jewish calendar and more). This page explains what information the app uses, how it is handled and how it is protected.
Using the app without an account
You can use Breslev Life without signing in. Your learning progress, settings and calendar events are then stored only on your own device (in your browser's local storage). We do not receive them.
Google sign-in
If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google, and the app saves your learning progress and settings to your account so they stay in sync between your devices. Sign-in is handled by Google (Firebase Authentication). We never see or store your Google password.
Google Calendar
Breslev Life can, only if you turn it on, connect to your Google Calendar so that the learning events and reminders you create in the app also appear in your Google Calendar, and the events already in your Google Calendar show in the app's weekly calendar next to them. For this the app asks Google for permission to view and edit events on your calendars (the calendar.events permission). The app uses this permission only to:
- add, update or remove, in your primary Google Calendar, the events and reminders that you create in the app (each one is tagged as created by Breslev Life, so an edit or a deletion in the app follows it);
- read the events of the week you are looking at in the app, so they can be shown to you in the app's calendar (tapping one opens it in Google Calendar).
Your Google Calendar data stays in your browser. The access token Google gives the app and the events read from your calendar are held only in your browser's memory for the current session, are used only to draw the calendar on your screen, and are never sent to or stored on our servers. The app does not change or delete events that it did not create. We do not use calendar data for advertising, do not sell it, do not share it with anyone and do not use it to build profiles.
You can disconnect Google Calendar at any time: in the app, open the calendar, tap a day and tap Disconnect (the app then drops its access token and asks Google to revoke it), or remove Breslev Life from your Google Account at myaccount.google.com/permissions. After that the app has no access to your calendar. Events that were already copied into your Google Calendar stay there and are yours to keep or delete in Google Calendar.
Breslev Life's use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Google user data, including Google Calendar data, is not used to develop, improve or train any generalized or non-personalized artificial intelligence or machine learning models.
What we store
- Your learning progress, bookmarks, selected learning cycles and app settings (when signed in).
- Calendar events you create in the app (when signed in), so they are available on all your devices.
- Messages you send through Contact Us (and the name, email or phone you choose to give with them), so we can answer you.
- If you use the Tzedaka screen, a record of the amount and the organization you chose, so the app can show you your giving.
- Basic technical information (for example the browser type and the date the app was opened) to keep the app working and to count how many people use it.
We do not collect payment card numbers. We do not show ads and we do not sell personal information to anyone.
How we protect your data
Security procedures are in place to protect the confidentiality of your data, including the sensitive data the app can receive through Google:
- Encryption in transit. The app is served only over HTTPS. Every connection between your device and our servers, between your device and Google, and between our servers and Google is encrypted with TLS.
- Encryption at rest. Account data is stored on Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore) and Cloudflare (D1) infrastructure, which encrypt stored data at rest.
- Access limited to you. Data saved to your account can be read or changed only by requests that carry your own valid, signed Google sign-in token. Our server checks the token's signature and expiry on every request and only returns or changes records that belong to your user ID. The database rules for account profiles allow each user to read and write only their own profile.
- Google Calendar data never reaches our servers. Calendar access tokens and the events read from your Google Calendar are kept only in your browser for the current session and are discarded when you close the app or disconnect. Nothing from your Google Calendar is written to our databases, logs or backups.
- Minimum permissions. The app asks only for the
calendar.eventspermission, which is the narrowest Google permission that lets it both add and update your reminders and show you the week's events. It does not request access to your other Google data (for example Gmail, Drive or your contacts), and it does not ask for calendar access at all unless you tap Connect Google Calendar. - Restricted administration. Only the app's owner can open the app's administration screen, and that screen does not contain any Google Calendar data. Account data is not shared with any third party except the hosting providers named above, which process it only to run the app.
- No secrets on the server for Google access. The app never receives or stores your Google password, and it does not hold a long-lived Google refresh token for your calendar; each session's access is granted by Google directly to your browser.
Data retention and deletion
- Device data (when not signed in) stays on your device until you clear it in the app (Settings > Data > Start over) or clear your browser data.
- Account data (learning progress, settings and app calendar events) is kept for as long as you have an account, so it can follow you between devices. Settings > Data > Start over erases your learning progress and settings on the device and in your account. To delete your account and everything stored under it, including your app calendar events and any Contact Us messages, email moishyberger148@gmail.com from the address you signed in with; we delete it within 30 days and confirm by email.
- Google Calendar data is not retained by us at all: the access token and the events shown from your calendar exist only in your browser for the current session and are gone when you close the app or disconnect. You can revoke the app's access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
- Contact Us messages are kept until your question is answered and then deleted on request.
Third-party services
The app loads Torah texts and calendar information from public sources (for example Sefaria and Hebcal), audio and video from Breslev Center (breslevcenter.com) and from our own media storage, and uses Google Firebase for sign-in and Cloudflare for hosting. Those services have their own privacy policies. They receive only what is needed to serve the request (for example the text or file you asked for).
Children
The app is intended for general audiences and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date. Questions or deletion requests: moishyberger148@gmail.com.
